Get Your Spring Lawn Ready For Summer: MN Spring Lawn Care Tips

preparing your lawn for springtime in MN

The snow is finally melting, and we’re starting to see peeks of brown in our lawns. Here at Alex’s Lawn & Turf, we are optimistically getting our lawn care equipment ready. We’re tuning up the mowers, putting string on the weed whips, and inventorying rakes – such an exciting time!

Let Your Lawn Dry Before Working

We are eager to get out and start cleaning up after the winter we’ve had, but of course, it is always a good idea to wait for the ground to dry out a bit before doing too much on your lawn. Too much traffic, or even a vigorous raking on wet soil can cause damage to soil structure. We are waiting for the snow to melt, and the frost to completely melt.

Yes, we’re as impatient as everyone else to see that green growth start!

As soon as the time is right, we’ll be out cleaning up leaves, picking up sticks, repairing damage from winter snow removal and vole activity, and then applying fertilizer and weed control measures in clients’ lawns. To prep lawns for a healthy growing season, we’re also completing early-season seedings and weed control applications.

How To Prepare Your Lawn For Spring

What can you do to help your lawn until it has dried out a bit? Keep a close eye on it to look for signs of winter damage, vole damage and any other stress from the past winter season.

While looking for vole activity, you can often identify their presence by noticing winding lines in the soil from their burrows. Also, as the snow continues to melt, be sure to look for pooling water in certain areas that last for extended amounts of time. Areas with poor drainage will often behave differently from the rest of your lawn, and can end up suffering from more diseases.

As the grass continues to green, look for patches that are seeming to remain brown, and note any changes in the shape or color of the grass. Does the brown spot spread? Is it shrinking? This information will be very helpful in diagnosing trouble spots in the lawn.
